Second Chance Marquess Book Blast + Giveaway

Second Chance Marquess
by Jessica Jefferson
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Historical Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:
When Wilhemina Turner’s younger sister runs off with a young Lothario, she has no choice but to turn to the notorious rake who broke his promise and her heart, for assistance. George Bartlett, the Marquess of Chesterton, hasn’t forgotten the woman who hurt him so many years ago, but can’t deny her request, knowing that his brother’s reputation, and fortune, is at risk. A series of misfortunes leave the straight-laced widow and committed bachelor stranded, sharing both close quarters and old secrets. But when morning comes, will this unlikely pair find a second chance at love?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt:
“Are you accusing Kitty of going after your brother for his money?”
“She wouldn’t be the first.”
Willie set her jaw firmly, just as she always had when she was angry. “A decade later and you’re still following your father’s example. You still think the worst of women, don’t you?”
“I’m simply waiting to be proven wrong.”
“You were,” she said quietly, almost too low for him to hear.
“Once, Willie, and even that’s debatable. Every woman after you has fulfilled my lowest expectations.”
She looked away, a pale blush spread across the creamy pale skin of her chest. “Mrs. Turner,” she reminded him, facing him once again. “Kitty’s not like that. She doesn’t need his money.”
“Both your parents are gone and last time I knew, you hadn’t a penny to your name. How can she not need my brother’s money?”
“Because I make sure she’s taken care of. I’d do anything for that girl, no matter how silly or naïve she is. She’s still mine to take care of.” She jutted her chin proudly, just as she always had. George had to remind himself that this was no longer the stubborn, hopeful young woman he once knew, but a strong, experienced widow standing before him.
“Mr. Turner left you comfortable then?”
“My finances are none of your concern. We are doing quite well considering our circumstance.”
He found that hard to believe. “Beg your pardon, Mrs. Turner, but a vicar and a viscount are two very different things. Now, if you don’t mind, I’ll need to get on the road soon. I heard mention that there might be a great deal of rain coming, possibly snow, and I doubt the weather will hold off much longer.” He turned his back to her and continued gathering the necessary items from around the study.
“I can’t allow you to go by yourself,” Wilhelmina protested, ignoring his less than subtle hint that their discussion had ended. “There’s no way I could possibly trust you to address this situation fairly after the unwarranted judgement you’ve already made regarding Kitty’s character.”
“It’s only unwarranted if it’s not true and that remains to be seen, now doesn’t it?”
“I won’t let you do it, George.”
The use of his given name stopped him cold. He took a deep breath, then turned to her, arms folded across his chest. “What exactly do you propose I do then, Mrs. Turner?”
“Take me with you.”
Excerpt:
The man could hear the child’s bellowing cries coming from underneath the blanket covering it. She pushed the child into his arms as if eager to be rid of it. He took the bundle and handed the nurse his packages. The nurse began to close the door when he heard another far away cry.
The man wedged his foot in the door. “What was that?”
“N-Nothing.” The nurse looked up.
The man risked looking her in the eye.
“The girl is in pain and won’t keep quiet.” She clutched the envelope and folded her arms across her sagging bosom.
“It sounded like another baby,” he said.
“It’s just the whimpering slut. Now she’s paid double for what she’s done.” The nurse took a step back as if aware she had said too much already. She glared at him. “Now go on. You have what you wanted. And so do I.” She shut the door in his face.
The man in black stood there for a long moment, considering the woman’s choice of words. What if another child had been delivered and the frigid woman and country doctor kept it secret?
Fascinating.
He decided to keep this information to himself. He would find the opportune time to use it. He was a patient man. But first, he had to see for himself. He peeled back the child’s bunting and looked for the first time into its yellow eyes. For that moment, the baby fell silent.
“Welcome to Earth X-10.”
The baby resumed its wailing.
The man turned with his noisy package and melted into the darkness satisfied, as the doctor had been, that the night’s events had provided him with more than he had asked for.
She fought the urge like mad to scoot closer to her potential client and find out what lay beneath those blue plaid boxers. Her good sense and professionalism warred with her very long-ignored womanly needs.
“Are you having sexy thoughts about me?” Ben asked, breaking into her sexy thoughts. Because his sexy had returned.
“Huh? Of course—not.” Her eyes were unfocused.
“You are. You want to sit on my lap again,” he accused.
“That—wouldn’t be wise.” But God, it would feel so good.
“Stop it! I’m asking for help, here, and you want to climb the tower of Ben.”
“Okay, this isn’t headed anywhere good,” Sabine said.
“Make you a deal.” He appeared deadly serious.
“I’m listening.”
“You stay here tonight—” He held up a hand to stop her shocked protest. “Listen. I’m suggesting I sleep off my beers, make a call to my buddy to have your car cleaned, and we discuss plans for my therapy. And I’ll make eggs in the morning. If you still look at me like that after I’ve sobered up, then, I’ll have no choice but to kiss you again.”
She couldn’t really see a flaw in his plan. Certainly, there were many, but right now, she was seriously charmed by a stinky, post-vomitous guy with a great house. “Um. I’m not sure that’s wise.”
“Why?”
 “Because I’m a little distracted by your sitting there in your underwear.”
His eyes changed, the atmosphere between them became charged. “I knew it.”
“Go take a shower and brush your teeth.”
Both laughed at that. Sabine had no idea where this might lead, but either way, she was certain it was a bad idea. Bad.
PROLOGUE
He heard it…he finally heard it!
Well, he thought he’d heard it. He couldn’t be sure. His head was still ringing from a massive—and quite unexpected—electrical shock.
One minute Brody had been climbing an old chain-link fence that encircled the mountain—listening intently through his headphones—the next he was flailing backward, thrown by an electrical jolt that had struck like lightning.
Only it wasn’t lightning.
The shock had most definitely come from that fence.
Brody had landed flat on his back on the frozen earth, and the impact had knocked the wind out of him.
Now gasping, he sucked on the cold Russian air, his body desperate for oxygen, but his mind racing for something else.
The sound he’d heard while climbing the fence—the one that had practically  vibrated the headphones right off his head—that hum…it was real! And it was right there on his—
Audio recorder.
Oh, shit.
Where was it? His recorder?
His headphones were still on his head, but his audio recorder had bounced out of its satchel. It had been a short fall, just ten feet or so. It couldn’t have gone far, and so long as it wasn’t damaged…
His heart sank into his guts.
What if it was broken? After traveling thousands of miles to Russia? After stealing away from his sleeping fiancée in the dead of the night and driving for nearly twenty-four hours, nonstop? After sneaking into an abandoned Soviet-era military installation?
Excerpt
Little Red Dress
Dani called from down the hall. “Did you find a pair?”
“Operation stiletto was a six-inch success.” Rolling onto her elbow, Mia snagged the bag and pulled out the shoebox. In a few hours, she’d hit the doors of the S & L in these unless she took a spill—
“Here. Knock ‘em dead.” Dani commanded her attention with an outstretched hand. Over her roommate’s finger hung a hanger, and she waved a tiny scrap of red leather in Mia’s direction.
“Interesting. But no.” Her brow knitted as she stared at the crisscrossing laces of the tiny corset. “When I said outfit, I was thinking something larger than a rubber band.”
“This dress will help you fit in.” Tutting, her roommate thrust the fetish dress into her hands. “Thank me later when you land your first job.”
“By chance does that job involve a street corner?”
“Funny,” Dani replied. “You’re stalling.”
“You do realize that I’m the one who’s gotta fit into this little number. Operative word: little.” Mia rose and held up the dress probably two sizes too small. “Just where am I supposed to fit my boobs?”
“Okay, I can see you’re going to overanalyze this into the ground.” Dani snapped her fingers. “Let’s go. Time to change. Stat.”
Rather than waste time arguing, she’d just try on the dress and make her point when a body part or two sprang loose.
Book Excerpt:
He seethed with indignation as he confronted his reflection.
Rasping with rage and flexing his fingers impotently, he took in his bruised
and broken face. This mirror was the only vanity he was allowed, and now it
only offered him the stark knowledge of his ugliness and weakness. Livid, he
smote the mirror with his fist. It shattered as he let out an incensed cry, the
fragments flying across the floor, glittering sharply in the dimming lights. He
looked down at the collage of broken glass and paused, numb with anger.
The shards of the mirror glittered and vibrated, reflecting
numerous eyes. Then they slowly began to levitate, all the tiny fragments
splintered across the room gathering together and reforming. Swiftly they
became whole again, and the mirror floated in the air eerily toward the
cardinal. Within the reflection he no longer saw himself, but another being
gazing back at him. Lost for breath, he gaped in bewilderment, unable to form
words. The being had the fairest of all faces. Beautiful, with an aura of
inexorable grace, it had resplendent, shimmering wings—pair upon pair of them
in varied iridescent hues. The countenance observed him with a soft smile,
measuring him with his intoxicating, lucent blue eyes. “Do you know who I am,
old man?” the mirror asked him blithely. The cardinal was immediately
enraptured, but could feel the cross burning on his neck. “Take it off and it
will not sear your skin,” the angel remarked mildly, his limpid blue eyes
gazing lovingly upon the cardinal. The cardinal, like a man too deeply drunken
to think, brought his hand to his neck and ripped the cross thoughtlessly off
and cast it away. “That is better now, isn’t it? Always bearing the cross.
Well, he carried his cross and now he wants the whole world to carry it with
him . . . how truly selfish.” The voice, though laced with reproach, was
heartrendingly sweet and full of understanding and promise. It rang like silver
bells. The cardinal’s mouth hung open indecorously, and he found himself
nodding his head in agreement with the angel’s words as his fear began to dissipate.
“I do not want you to carry this cross, this heavy burden of debt,” the angel
continued. “This false salvation you were peddled is a lie. I, on the contrary,
want you to be free, liberated from your thralldom. The earth is your
inheritance to rule over as a god, like you were promised. And yet they have
deprived you of your freedom. My heart grieves for you,” the angel sympathized,
his voice laden with unquenchable sorrow. As the angel spoke, the mirror began
to ripple like molten silver, and he emerged from it, as though pushing through
a translucent shroud. Robed in white flowing garments, he grasped a long spear
in his left hand pointing it downwards, the bitter tip glistening coldly.
Standing before the cardinal revealed in his full glory, he smiled fully—but
the warmth never reached his detached, frosted gaze. “I want to liberate you
from your thralldom,” he said. “I have watched over you all, my tender flock. I
am Lucifer, the morning star, the first to greet you with my love into this
life, and the last to claim you on my dark stallion of death. I have come to
free you.” His persuasive voice was soothing and nurturing, like a gentle river
rippling mildly over soft bedrock. The cardinal found himself in a daze of awe,
and within him woke his longing for power and lust for dominion. “Come to me,
let me free you, and we shall destroy the Twilit world that has robbed you of
the gifts that you so deserved.” The fatherly voice of the angel was indignant
yet gentle, and he beamed at the cardinal who nodded back eagerly. “Let me into
your heart, then. Lead me into your house, in this false edifice erected in the
name of God, and let us together find the lost sheep in the house of God. I am
his true son, after all, prince of the world.” He glided towards the cardinal,
his numerous nacre wings extending into the chamber. They shed their own pearly
light, and it seemed he floated like a silver vision. The angel knelt beside
the cardinal, gazing into his watery eyes. “Let me into his house.” The voice
was slightly more pressing now. The cardinal, dazed, nodded in agreement. With
a satisfied smile, the angel touched the cardinal’s chest with a slender
finger, right at his heart, and breathed over him. The cardinal groaned,
falling instantly asleep. The angel then shifted like a blurring image, colors
melting and running, twisting like molten glass into a murky mess of shadow and
dirt-colored fumes. The gleaming wings fell to the ground, losing their
feathers and rotting instantly. Now instead of the radiant angel, there stood a
hooded and cloaked figure, emanating death. Like a black hole, it sucked in all
the light around him, exerting a fearsome pull. The light from the candles
swirled and were drawn into him, as though he were a gasping sinkhole.
The lights that weren’t drowned out flared in his presence,
then guttered as he walked towards the discarded cross lying dully on the
ground. With his foot he trampled it into the ground. Then the lights went out
and laughter resounded. It echoed through the abbey walls, shaking it to its
foundations until all the lights within went out, and all the icons fell to the
ground, dashed down by something far more sinister than the raging gale
outside.
Will she and Dex figure out how to help the spirits cross and if they do, will she be able to let Cal go?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT:
An unnatural blue-white light spilled outward, making her squint. Blinding bright in the center, it faded to murky shadows in the corners. Tamara’s heart all but stopped when shapes developed within the bright center. A crowd of people surged forward, scattering in all directions across her yard.

There were so many. Panic filled Tamara while she tried to figure out what to do, how to defend herself against so many. Who were all these people? Why had they been in her barn? Why is that man digging?

“Hey, stop!” she yelled.

A woman in a torn red dress stumbled up the hill reminding Tamara of herself in last night’s dream. The woman’s long blond hair streamed behind her in the windless night. She continually glanced over her shoulder, a terrified expression gnarling her beautiful face, though no one pursued her.

Then a single man sauntered forward, his attention intent on Tamara. The bright light behind him made it impossible for her to make out any detail, but his manner seemed equal parts commanding and relaxed. Her heart fluttered madly, and she felt the muzzle of the rifle dip toward the ground as she considered fleeing. A flat, wide-brimmed cowboy hat sat straight on his head. Well-worn leather chaps covered his bowed legs. Strange clicking noises accompanied him across the lawn. As he drew closer his image sharpened. When Tamara saw his face, she lowered the gun barrel. “Sheesh, I am dreaming.”

She looked into the skinless face of her latest nightmare.

“Ma’am, I can assure you, this is no dream.”

Along comes sexy literature professor, Dr. Ethan Quinn, who says it’s all about the romance. He thinks the pretty psychology professor has taken love and all its mysteries and reduced it to something as romantic as a cholesterol test, and he sets out to prove her theory wrong.

When Ethan signs up for her study, Sam discovers to her horror, that according to her compatibility test, they are a perfect match. Sam faces an existential crisis over her career and her research. If she believes in her science, shouldn’t it follow that she believes Ethan is her perfect mate? And if she doesn’t believe he’s her perfect mate, doesn’t that bring into question her research? Her compatibility test? Her reputation? And her very career?

As Sam struggles with her dilemma, Ethan pursues her with all the romantic tactics in his arsenal. Will Sam’s theories succumb to his challenge? Or will Ethan lose the battle for Sam’s heart?

Liora Day, half-human, half mess-with-her-and-you’ll-die Damaclan, had been thrown onto a rough path at a very early age. But when she is broken out of a cage by Devren, the young captain of the SS Kratos, she is shown that perhaps humanity does have a heart. The Kratos is set on a mission to rescue fallen surveyors from the Revolutionaries, and Liora is given the choice to follow her Damaclan instincts, or trust Devren’s dark eyes and captivating smile that promise an adventure unlike any she has ever experienced.

EXCERPT:

Liora twisted the bent end inward until she felt the teeth slide free. She slipped the bar from the handcuff and let it fall off her wrist. In two more seconds, the other cuff was on the floor.

The lock of her cage proved to be more difficult. Luckily, Liora had the two pieces of the tweezers to work with. She bent the second one to match the angle of the first. Following the same steps the apprentice had done so many times, Liora pushed the bent end of the first piece into the lock opposite the pins. She turned it slowly upward until it was in tension.

Inserting the second piece, Liora raked it slowly along the pins. The small metal on metal sound set Liora’s nerves on end. If Malivian found out what she was doing, she would be tortured again. The voice in the back of her mind whispered that perhaps she wouldn’t survive a second round.

A subtle, metallic click sounded. Liora’s heart jumped. She pushed at the bars. Her breath caught in her throat when the door swung outward. Liora stepped onto the cold floor and stumbled lightheadedly. She caught herself on the next cage, pushed upright, and ran down the hall.

The alarm sounded when she hit the button for the hatch to open. As soon as the gap was wide enough, Liora jumped out. Her feet, then her knees, hit the deck of Gaulded Zero Twenty-One. She shoved up to her feet once more and ran past the other starships.

Even at the late hour, the Gaulded’s landing deck was filled with activity. It appeared the Kratos and Kirkos weren’t the only ships who had been attacked. Blow torches, plasma cutters, and blazers filled the contained air inside the Gaulded’s hold with the acrid scent of metal. The sound of mallets and hand saws sounded from every corner.

Crew members of the ships Liora passed turned to watch her go. She felt conspicuous and alone as she darted between space crafts and around repair gear. A giant pallet of artillery swung over her head. Liora ducked and made her way along the stripped hull of a Copper Crow painted to look like an iridescent fish. The name Space Poseidon glowed near the hatch.

Liora ran around the corner and slammed into Devren.

“I was about to come looking for you—” he began.

Tariq cut him off. “Dev, her face.”

Devren gently pushed her back so he could see her better. Liora dropped her gaze at his gentle probing.

“Malivian did this to you?” he asked.

The anger in his voice made Liora look up. Devren appeared ready to kill someone.

“Calm down,” Tariq told him. “Let’s get her to the ship. It’s the only place we’ll have leverage.”

Devren put a protective arm around Liora. Tariq walked behind them like a bodyguard. Liora felt as though she had entered some different reality. Somehow, even with the thought of Malivian coming after her, she felt safe between the two humans who had entered her life by accident.
